In honor of tonight’s Oscars we thought we’d put together a list of this year’s nominees and their workout routines!

First up, Margot Robbie.  Margot plays Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya.”   When preparing for movie roles, Robbie does a mixture of exercises.  She loves boot camps, pilates, ballet and more. Robbie says, “We also mix in non-bulking cardio such as jump rope, rebounder and ballet jumps — which are surprisingly the most challenging form of cardio I’ve ever come across.  We did a lot of heavy-weighted, low reps of arabesque pulls hooked up to resistance pulleys, as well as arabesque lifts with heavy ankle weights in order to build and lift the butt.  We also did a ton of side series outer thigh work, targeting outer glutes with high reps and low weights, to pull those muscles in and create a beautiful line from the waist to the upper thigh.”  Kudos on your commitment to health, Margot!

This year, Saoirse Ronan is nominated for Lady Bird – a coming of age film about a teenage girl.  Although this role didn’t require any training, Saoirse went through extremely rigorous workouts a few years back for a movie called Hanna where she played a teenage assassin.  In reminiscing about the film, she said, “I trained for about two months before we started shooting, and I learnt new skills like knife fighting, stick fighting, how to shoot a gun, martial arts. There was a style designed by Jeff Amada, who’s the stunt coordinator, and it was created specifically for the character of Hanna. It was based on the strength and energy and body type and things like that. We worked on that every single day, and I felt like I was starting to walk differently. I’d hold myself differently. I felt stronger, just after a few weeks. It was amazing. It was a great way to focus.”

Daniel Day Lewis, nominated for Phantom Thread, is probably the most famous ‘method’ actor around.  When preparing for his role in The Boxer, he trained as a real fighter, 2x a day, 7 days a week, for roughly 3 years,  under the direction of former world champion Barry McGuigan.  McGuigan claims he could have become a professional!

Denzel Washington – hoping to bring home the Oscar for his film, Roman J. Israel, Esq. – is no stranger to a tough workout.  He does 10 rounds of boxing five days a week. He enjoys this exercise because it helps him to burn fat and build muscles, all at once!  He eats very ‘clean’ and focuses on foods that help him to maintain lean muscle mass and low-fat level in his body.  His exercise routine and diet plans are closely supervised by the celebrity fitness expert Kacy Duke.
